Perfection Is Just Insecurity Disguised
That’s an awesome quote (and no, it isn’t one of mine). The great Gary V said that recently on one of his podcasts and he really hit the nail on the head.
Striving for perfection 100% of the time is a serious risk to your mental health.
As business owners, we all like to think that we’re perfectionists, but for some of us that simply means being the best that we can be and producing the best products and services that we can.
However, there are some of us who really go all out for perfection, in such a way that it will stop them putting themselves out there, for fear that it’s only at 99%.
These people are literally terrified and losing sleep over that 1% and how it will be noticed, pulled apart and analysed.
Perfection is subjective though isn’t it?
Perfection to me is my daughters smile. To someone else it’s just another cheeky 5 year old.
It’s the way my mum used to make homemade chips taste SO good, but someone else’s idea of the perfect chip would be completely different.
Perfection in my business is knowing my client is happy and seeing the awesome changes they’re making.
So perfection isn’t in the detail really, it’s in how something is perceived by somebody. How it makes them feel, the memories they take from it, the experience they have with it. It’s lots of different things that add up to become PERFECT.
So you see, when you’re chasing perfection, the chances are you probably reached it already, but because you’re our own most aggressive critic, you won’t allow yourself to see it for what it is, through fear of being judged and found lacking.
Take the leap and stop procrastinating. You’re ready now. You are more than able, and way good enough to do whatever it is you want to do. Just go do it, and to hell with perfection.
