Thoughts

My musings and opinions on all the issues that tiny businesses face. From frequently asked questions I come across each week, to hot topics of the moment, if you have a question or issue, you’ll find the answers in this section.

How Often Should You Post on Social Media?

Good Question! And the answer is .. however often you can post good quality, engaging content!
For the majority of tiny businesses, with a Facebook or Instagram following of under 10,000 people, there are guidelines which certain research has shown work well.

Facebook:
I personally usually post three times a week on my own business page, and for the pages I manage for my clients. At most, once a day is optimal, but more than that and research shows that the engagement rate per post decreases.

Twitter:
Tweets have a much shorter shelf life, and therefore activity rates need to be much higher on Twitter. Opinions range from 1 a day to 100’s a day, so it’s really up to you, but if you can put out a few a day as a tiny business to start with, that will enable you to build up your activity and your following.

Instagram:
Instagram is mainly visual, so if you have a visually based business you’ll be in a much better position here! Ideally, you’ll be aiming for a daily post on Instagram, two if you can.

Pinterest:
Now this may seem high, but anything between 5 and 20 pins a day is fairly normal. If you are wanting to build a steady following on Pinterest without spending too much time, then go for 3-5 a day, and remember that can be content you are pinning which others may have created, it doesn’t need to be content you’ve created yourself.
If you’re wanting to really up the ante on here, go for 10-15 pins a day and you’ll see a difference in activity.

LinkedIn:
For LinkedIn, it’s all about connections and interacting rather than catching attention with posts, so with this platform a couple of great posts a week is fine. If you are wanting to really do great things with LinkedIn, then once a day is the most you need to do.
