How To Increase Facebook Engagement
This has got to be the one thing which stumps business owners everywhere when it comes to Facebook, and with good reason, as this is SO important to get right!
Let’s confirm what is meant by ‘engagement’. In Facebook terms, it means the meaningful interactions that your audience, likers and followers have with the content you put out there.
Types of engagement are likes, the emoticons for the heart and laughing or shocked face, a comment, a share, or tagging someone in the comments of your post. Facebook favours some types of engagement over others; for example if your post got 100 likes, fine. If your post got 50 hearts, 50 likes, 20 comments, a couple of shares - well THAT’S the engagement they’re looking for.
To put it simply, Facebook wants to know that you are entertaining and interacting with people on your business page, and if people are just clicking ’like’ then they’re not really engaged. They want you to work harder to keep your audience happy, and their infamous algorithm makes sure that happens, or the reach of your posts will decrease accordingly. With me so far?
So how do you get the number of people who engage with your posts up?
The easy answer is - YOU ASK THEM!
That might seem like I’m stating the obvious, but it’s surprising how many business owners miss this step.
They write a great post, spend time creating the perfect image to go with it, and then … nothing.
Start your post with a question aimed directly at your niche targeted customers.
Then write your great content.
End the post by asking your readers something, or telling them what to do.
For example, if I was writing this as a Facebook post, my heading would be ‘Do you struggle with Facebook Engagement?’
My content would be similar to that which is written above, and then at the end of the post I would write, ‘Tell me which of your recent posts have had the most engagement!’
Switch it up with your posts so that you have a selection of content types to encourage different styles of engagement:
A video will get likes and hearts
A funny GIF or meme will get laughing emojis
A choice of two or more options will encourage comments etc
Variety matters, and if you struggle to come up with ideas for content, then slow down on posting and just put out 3 or 4 posts a week which work well, rather than posting every day for the sake of it.
Bad content won’t do anyone any good!
